Science and Information

The Science and Information Division gathers, analyses and distributes knowledge to underpin the management of natural resources across New South Wales. It supports the core functions of the Department and works collaboratively with other organisations that have roles in natural resource sciences.

Functions

The division provides:

  • information and technical support to other divisions within the Department, Catchment Management Authorities, the Natural Resources Commission, local Councils, community groups and landholders;
  • long term research to improve knowledge as well as expertise to address immediate priorities;
  • links between land and water use and natural resource management;
  • triple bottom line (economic, social and environmental) analysis and policy audits;
  • analysis and audit of policies and operations of state (and national) significance; and
  • information management systems to enable multiple uses from departmental data.

Science and Information Board

An independent Science and Information Board has been established as a peer review body, ensuring DNR builds a reputation as an agency backed by world class science and information for natural resource management and planning.

This Board provides the mechanism for enabling consistency in the science and knowledge needs across DNR in order to deliver big picture, landscape scale outcomes.

The Board has prepared a Knowledge Strategy which identifies the key science, research and information needs for DNR to deliver its Corporate Plan priorities.
